PRAYING FOR OTHERS USING THE POWER OF SCRIPTURE

When Paul was writing to the people in the churches he loved so dearly he knew the power of praying for others. Yet his prayers were not always for the obvious. It seems he realised that as much as God wants to meet our external needs, Paul knew the importance of praying for our internal needs too.

Here are three ways we can pray for others using the power of scripture…

A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL WISDOM

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him--since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened--so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe. Ephesians 1:17-19

  • Pray that others would grow in spiritual wisdom not just natural wisdom

  • Pray that others would grow in their knowledge of God

A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL STRENGTH

I pray that according to the wealth of his glory [the Father] may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love, you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:16-19

-      Pray for power and strength for people on the inside

-      Pray for a revelation of the largeness of God’s love

A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL FRUIT

And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11

  • Pray for others to show love that would make a difference to our world

  • Pray that others would produce fruit that would bring praise to God

SPIRITUAL WISDOM, SPIRITUAL STRENGTH & SPIRITUAL FRUIT

All three of these characteristics are summed up in this final prayer found in Colossians.

[I ask] God to fill you with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects--bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints' inheritance in the light. Colossians 1:9b-12

No matter what is going on around us on the outside, we can always pray for breakthrough on the inside. As you continue to pray for others, it may just be worth praying into this truth for yourself…
